UPDATE: Woman, dog die in Cobb County condo fire

A condo building on Drennon Avenue caught fire, officials said Tuesday morning.

A woman and a dog died in a Cobb County condo fire Tuesday morning, officials said.

She was one of two people taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital after they were rescued from the blaze in the 2000 block of Drennon Avenue in unincorporated Austell, Cobb County fire spokeswoman Denell Boyd said.

Firefighters arrived at the condo about 7:20 a.m. after the fire started in an upstairs bedroom, Boyd said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Boyd said it appears accidental.

The condo is near the Silver Comet Trail between Anderson Mill and Austell roads.

Three people lived in the condo, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“I loved her to death and she was like a sister to me,” Diane Elsner, one of the victim’s friends, told the news station. “My husband is disabled, so I tried to get him out because he was in the room where the flames were, so I had to try to get him down the stairs, and once I did that and tried to go back up, it was just too hot … I couldn’t breathe.”

The condo appears to be a complete loss.
