Commuters and others who drive I-75 in the south part of metro Atlanta now have another option.

Formally known as the I-75 South Metro Express Lanes, the 11.5 miles of reversible toll lanes, which opened Saturday morning, sit in the median between the normal northbound and southbound lanes, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The lanes run from Locust Grove to the I-675 split, Channel 2 said. Traffic will flow north in the morning, south in the afternoon.

Using the lanes is free for the first 14 days, and then prices will fluctuate based on traffic, officials said. The price could be as low as 50 cents and could increase to as much as 90 cents per mile. Toll rates will be displayed on overhead signs so drivers will know the price before they enter.

“So we’re adding about 60 percent additional capacity," Chris Tomlinson of the State Road and Tollway Authority told Channel 2. "All at once. So it’s exciting.”

Drivers will need a Peach Pass to use the toll lanes, even during the free period.

If you drive onto the toll lanes without a Peach Pass, enforcement cameras will take a time-stamped image of your license plate, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. You’ll be fined $25 per violation, plus the toll that was not paid.
