Those attending events in Atlanta, such as the Dogwood Festival, on Sunday had to contend with traffic from people returning from spring break, according to Georgia Department of Transportation officials.

Nearly 85,000 people were expected to flood the streets of Midtown over the weekend to attend the 81st annual Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park.

As early as 2 p.m., motorists jammed up I-75 northbound between exits 205 and 222, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The I-85 bridge collapse continues to create problems in the metro Atlanta area and GDOT officials warn this week will present the first true traffic test since the incident.

Officials anticipate a 30 percent increase in traffic volume, and even higher volumes on local streets as motorists search for alternative routes, Peggy Allen, director of Roads and Drainage for DeKalb County, said in a news release.

“We ask for patience, early starts and creative commuting, including carpooling and the use of transit,” Allen said.

Traffic along I-85 north was delayed about three minutes Sunday afternoon, while I-75 between I-285 and Wade Green Road had about a two-minute delay, according to WSB.

The state has pledged to open  the I-85 bridge by June 15.

With spring break ending, Monday's commute is expected to be a nightmare.
