Two women were hit on I-75 after getting out of their vehicles — accidents that shut down all southbound lanes near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for nearly six hours Wednesday morning.

About 4:50 a.m., a woman’s vehicle stalled in the southbound lanes of the interstate just before the I-285 split, Clayton County police spokeswoman Ashanti Marbury said in an emailed statement. That woman got out of her vehicle and was hit at least once, Marbury said.

“The driver of the vehicle that struck the female stopped and exited her vehicle to render aid,” Marbury said in the statement. “As she exited her vehicle, she and her vehicle were struck by an SUV.” The SUV then hit a guardrail.

A fourth vehicle, which was towing a boat, “made an attempt to avoid the collision,” she said. That caused the boat to overturn.

The injured women, whose names were not released, were taken to local hospitals in critical condition, Marbury said. Police have not said if the other drivers suffered any injuries.

All southbound traffic was diverted off I-75 at Central Avenue until the interstate reopened just before 10:30 a.m.
