The Falcons open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles Monday night, and with a 7:10 p.m. kickoff, football fans and homeward-bound commuters can expect traffic downtown to be heavier than normal.

"Folks traveling to the Georgia Dome will mix with the usual commuters, making I-75 southbound, Ga. 400 southbound and I-85 southbound approaching and through downtown Atlanta extra heavy," said Kim McCarthy in the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. "Expect extra congestion on Northside Drive and all of the east/west streets between 14th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as well."

At least there won't be any inclement weather throwing a monkey wrench into the works, as fair skies and cooler temperatures are in the forecast for Monday afternoon and evening.

McCarthy suggests fans use MARTA to get to the game. Those who take rapid transit from four MARTA stations will get a free ride, courtesy of the Falcons and Miller Lite.

United Distributors, MARTA, the Falcons and Miller Lite are teaming up to give away a total of 12,500 MARTA Breeze tickets before Monday’s game and the team’s second regular season home game on Oct. 4.

The free ride tickets will be distributed from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lindbergh, H.E. Holmes, Indian Creek and College Park MARTA stations.
