Suspect surrenders in fatal shooting outside Kennesaw club

An Atlanta man who allegedly shot and killed a 27-year-old man after a weekend fight at a Cobb County nightclub surrendered early Thursday, Kennesaw police said.

Lewarner Jaron Scott was charged with murder and three counts of aggravated assault, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He surrendered about 3 a.m. and was booked into the Cobb jail, Officer Scott Luther said.

“Said accused discharged a firearm approximately 4-5 times into the rear of a 2009 Nissan Versa in the parking lot of Diamond Dave’s,” the arrest warrant states. “As a result, the victim, Kevin Compton who was seated in the left rear of the Nissan Versa, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Compton later died as a result of the injury received from the gunshot wound.”

It was not known Thursday whether Scott knew Compton or whether Compton was the intended target, Luther said.

Investigators believe a fight that started inside the club, located in a shopping center on Cobb Parkway, spilled into the parking lot about 2:40 a.m. Saturday. Witnesses heard gunshots fired as the Nissan was leaving the parking lot, the warrant states.

After shooting at the car, Scott allegedly drove his car back to the front of the club and tried to convince his friends to leave, the warrant states. But when they declined, Scott drove away alone, moments after Kennesaw officers arrived at the club. An officer’s dashboard camera captured Scott with what appeared to be gun in his waistband, the warrant states.

While officers were investigating at the club, the Nissan’s driver traveled north to Acworth, where he called 911 after realizing Compton, the backseat passenger, had been shot in the head, according to police. Compton was transported to the hospital, where he died Sunday.

Later Sunday, police secured an arrest warrant for Scott, who eluded arrest until about 3 a.m. Thursday, when he surrendered. His mug shot was not immediately available.
