Suspect in Gwinnett motel death arrested in Mississippi

Police track Intown Suites homicide suspect to Mississippi

The man accused of shooting and killing a man at a Gwinnett County extended-stay motel was arrested Monday in Mississippi, police said.

Philip Pugh, 40, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault for allegedly killing Vincent Newsome at the InTown Suites on U.S. 78 around 12:35 p.m. Saturday, Cpl. Jake Smith with Gwinnett police said. Newsome, 50, a resident of the motel, died after being transported to Gwinnett Medical Center.

On Monday, police were investigating whether or not revenge was a motive in the shooting, Smith said.

Last week, a family member of Pugh’s reported she had been drugged and raped five months ago the InTown Suites, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The alleged incident was reported after a cell-phone video of the assault surfaced and was being distributed, the report states.

“I just want justice,” Pugh previously told police, the report states.

It was not known Monday whether Newsome and Pugh knew each other, Smith said. But Pugh may have believed Newsome was involved, police said.

Gwinnett detectives were headed to Mississippi late Monday to interview Pugh.
