Police are seeking a man who they say sent threatening messages to a Sandy Springs synagogue.

Sandy Springs police are searching for Charles B. Cortell, saying he’s made phone calls to Congregation Beth Tefillah threathening that members are going to die, according to police record.

“The suspect has made numerous harassing phone (calls) to the synagogue talking about the IRS … and that the Jews are going die,” according to a Sandy Springs police incident report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police also said Cortell, 47, has sent emails to several congregation members and paid an uninvited visit to the home-office of one of the congregation’s rabbis.

Cortell may be in possession of a gun that was seen at some point in the trunk of his car, police said.

Police call the threats odd, because Cortell also is Jewish, Channel 2 Action News is reporting. But police tell Channel 2 they believe he has mental issues.

Anyone with information about Cortell’s whereabouts is asked to contact Ryan Finley with the Sandy Springs Police at 770-551-6900.
