October 5, 2016 Atlanta: Gil Zins had a double take on Robin Hood Road in Atlanta Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016 as he and his 13-week old Samoyed dog "Viking" passed another skeletal dog walker on their morning walk. The skeletal pair were part of a front yard Halloween decoration that is typical in the neighborhood during October. The fall weather is getting scary as Hurricane Matthew makes its way from the Caribbean towards the U.S. coast, but Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said, "We are looking for our area to be on the light side of the winds." The impact on metro Atlanta is expected to be minimal. The Category 3 hurricane making its way past the Caribbean could bring wind gusts up to 25 mph to metro Atlanta, according to Channel 2. Distillers in the famous Maotai town along the Chishui River produce well over half of the country's baijiu, the potent traditional Chinese wine made with fermented sorghum that is popular at state functions and often sells for hundreds of dollars per bottle. The most famous wine brands have long used the Chishui as their prime water source, giving the 437-kilometer long mainstream of the river a treasured reputation as being the "River of Wines". That the area is also revered as the site of a 1935 revolutionary battle led by Mao Zedong during the historic Long March of the Red Army has fortified efforts to protect the ecology of the Chishui and the river basin. This year, governments in the three provinces that the river crosses imposed strict measures to curb sewage disposal, over-development, and environmental degradation. As a result, the Chishui, which literally means "red water river' due to its reddish sentiment, is the only branch of the upper Yangtze that is not polluted, has no dams or reservoirs on its mainstream, and will eventually have a full ban on fishing. Authorities also closed nearly five hundred distilleries and paper mills. Major distillers dependent on the health of the "River of Wines" pay millions of dollars per year toward environmental maintenance and enforcement. October 3, 2016 Atlanta : The drought continues for metro Atlanta, but for 8-year old, Lawrence Yu who was off from school at Woodward Academy on Monday, Oct. 3, 2016 – The Splashpad was the place to be. The Splashpad features multiple jets of streaming water from the ground as well as overhead at Atlanta's Historic Fourth Ward Park that starts behind Ponce City Market and spans South to Freedom Parkway and the Carter Center. Yu was treated to the day by aunt, Andrea Edwards (not pictured) who treated him to the Beltline and Ponce City Market as well. Plenty of sunshine pushed temperatures into the 80s Monday in metro Atlanta. Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the main features in the forecast are sunshine and dry heat.
