January 12, 2017 Atlanta: EagleÕs Landing High School student, Kaleb Carter-15 from Henry County joined his fellow NJROTCÊclassmates to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site at 450 Auburn Ave NE in Atlanta on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017. Carter said he likes the National Center for Civil and Human Rights better because its bigger but added that there was more specific things related to Dr. King at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Visitors to civil rights destination sites and programs in Atlanta are on the increase before the federal holiday. In Atlanta, the birthplace of the civil rights activist, there are numerous ways to acknowledge the upcoming federal holiday. Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King once served as co-pastor, will once again memorialize its most famous member during an annual celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative service, coming just days before Donald TrumpÕs inauguration, will feature Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, to deliver a Òspecial tributeÓ at MondayÕs Ebenezer Baptist Church ceremony.ÊElsewhere, Atlanta museums will host family-friendly educational programs, and counties throughout metro Atlanta will host local parades and programs. LEDE PHOTO - January 9, 2017 DeKalb County: DeKalb County authorities are investigating a massive fire that ripped through an abandoned doctorÕs office and shut down a busy road for more thanÊthree hours Monday. Officials thought someone who was trying to escape frigid temperatures might have beenÊtrapped inside the two-story building in the 4800 block of Redan Road, DeKalb fire Capt. Eric Jackson said. They later learned that was not the case, he said. ÒThe DeKalb County Fire Department got the initial call just after 6:15 a.m. Monday about a blaze near South Hairston and Redan roads. ÒIt did come out as a reported entrapment,Ó Jackson said. ÒBut there was so much fire involvement, our firefighters could not make entry.Ó The fire ripped through the two-story building and left behind a cloud of heavy smoke and raging flames in the 4800 block of Redan Road. Firefighting efforts shut down Redan Road, east of South Hairston Road more than three hours, accordingÊto theÊWSB 24-hour Traffic Center. ÒWe sometimes have to shut down a main thoroughfare to obtain water supply, which is what we did with the help of DeKalb police,Ó Jackson said. There were some delays accessing that water. Crews initially attempted to connect to a fire hydrant, but a stem that allows water to flow up through the hydrant broke. ÒSo that put us in another mode to have to look for a secondary means of water supply,Ó Jackson said. Firefighters did find a hydrant across the street and another at the far end of a nearby shopping center. January 9, 2017 Norcross. One of the most wanted man in Gwinnett County was captured this afternoon in a house located in 835 Lawndale in Norcross. During the search of the house all the occupants in the house ware handcuffed but later release.
Enrique Carrera, 27, of Norcross, was wanted on aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and reckless conduct charges after he allegedly shot a security guard about 3 a.m. Nov. 24 at night club Caf Area 504 on Indian Trail Road.
