A person was dead after a fiery, single-vehicle crash late Wednesday in northern Cherokee County, according to the county’s fire department.

Shortly before 11 p.m., witnesses reported seeing a car on fire on Ball Ground Highway, near the intersection of Dodd Lane, fire department spokesman Tim Cavender said.

“The couple turned their car around to go back and check on the vehicle and later noticed that the car had left the highway, went through a pasture fence and traveled approximately 240 feet before crashing into a ditch,” Cavender said in an emailed statement.

The 1998 Honda Accord was fully engulfed when investigators arrived. When the flames were extinguished, investigators found the body of the car’s driver, Cavender said. Pictures from the crash scene show the car was extensively damaged.

The body was sent to the state Crime Lab for identification, Cavender said. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.

By late afternoon, the person had not been identified, a GSP spokesperson said.
