Mark Cuban is stepping up to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Maria devastated the island and left it without power since Sept. 20.
ESPN reported that the Dallas Mavericks owner loaned the team plane to point guard J.J. Barea, the only active player on the team who is Puerto Rican.
The jet will deliver food, water and other supplies to the island to help with recovery.
“That's a situation that he's got to take care of,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “Mark gave him our team plane. They loaded up a bunch of stuff, supplies, etc., to take over to Puerto Rico, and they’re going to turn around and come back. He’s going to take his mom and grandmother back with him, and my understanding is his dad is going to stay over there and slug it out with all of the recovery efforts.”
“I was really proud of J.J. and how quickly he got involved and how hard he worked to make all of this happen,” Cuban told ESPN.
Sports Illustrated reported that Barea’s wife, Viviana Ortiz, has set up a YouCaring page to raise relief funds. The model and actress’ fundraiser with Barea has raised more than $130,000.
Miami native Pitbull also loaned a private jet to relief efforts. E! News reported his private plane will transfer cancer patients from Puerto Rico to the United States.
Jennifer Lopez, Daddy Yankee, Marc Anthony and Alex Rodriguez have also made pledges and donations for relief that total well over $1 million.
