Holiday shoppers pining for colorful Christmas trees

Green is a traditional color for Christmas trees, but are you pining for a gold one? Or pink? How about purple?

Some tree farms are now offering different colored pine trees.

According to House Beautiful, the trees are created from a process that uses a special dye. The dye will only stick to the tree when temperatures are 40 degrees or warmer.

At Jack Keilman Trees in Johnsontown, Pennsylvania, farmers use a secret dye to color their trees deep blue, purple, or red hue. At Battaglia Christmas Tree Farm in San Martin, California, the company provides a tree-tinting service. Customers have requested just about every shade, House Beautiful reported, including black and a red-and-gold pattern requested by a San Francisco 49ers fan.

WABC reported that the owners of one farm in New Jersey, which uses a fireproof latex paint, said the different-colored trees were so popular they sold out of them last weekend. According to one tree farm manager, customers have bought trees in every color — from black to red and gold.

Besides having a cool color, experts say these trees benefit from the dye since it can help preserve the needles, House Beautiful reported.
