Police say a pileup involving more than 50 vehicles shut down snowy Interstate 78 in central Pennsylvania Saturday morning.

Trooper Justin Summa told The Associated Press that three fatalities had been confirmed and scores were injured. The most critically injured patients were flown to area hospitals while at least 70 patients were transported by ambulance.

The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. Saturday. It is believed that weather played a factor, as a snow squall struck the area around the time of the accident.

The interstate was closed in both directions while emergency responders worked the scene.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
