DNA links Florida man to 26-year-old double murder

A Florida man in jail for shooting his son with a pellet gun was arrested and charged with the raping and killing of an 11-year-old girl and her babysitter 26 years ago.

As Joe Zieler, 54, sat in jail on a felony battery charge for shooting his son with a pellet gun in August, his DNA was matched to that of the brutal crime scene where the bodies of Robin Cornell and Lisa Story were found in 1990.

"We got him," Cape Coral police Chief Newlan told the The Fort Myers News-Press. "This brings closure to the family. Twenty-six years is a long time."

Jan Cornell spent the night at her boyfriend's house May 9, 1990. She left her daughter Robin, 11, with Story, her roommate. She returned home in the morning and found her daughter and roommate were dead.

Cornell said she has no idea about any connection to Zieler, who was 28 at the time of the crime.

"I've looked at every outlet to see where there might have been a connection," Cornell told The Fort Myers News-Press.
