Cincinnati Zoo deletes Twitter account after being trolled by Harambe memes

After being bombarded with Harambe memes in the wake of a plea for people to stop creating them, the Cincinnati Zoo has deleted its Twitter account.

"We are not amused by the memes, petitions and signs about Harambe," Thane Maynard, the Cincinnati Zoo's director, told the Associated Press on Monday. "Our zoo family is still healing, and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more difficult for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us."

Maynard's personal Twitter account was hacked over the weekend by an internet troll who tweeted Harambe memes. Maynard's account was later deactivated.

Communications director Michelle Curley confirmed that the zoo deleted its Twitter account Monday but did not provide any additional details, CNN reported. A zoo spokesperson said, "Thanks. We know," when asked about the Twitter deletion, according to Cincinnati.com.

The zoo still has social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook.

Harambe was a 17-year-old gorilla that was shot and killed on May 28 when a 3-year-old boy climbed into the gorilla enclosure at the Ohio zoo. Zoo workers said they feared for the child's life.
