1946: Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III was born in Selma, Ala. and grew up in Hybart. The tiny farming community is mostly gone today. (Alan Judd / ajudd@ajc.com)

1965: Sessions graduated from all-white Wilcox County High School in nearby Camden. During his school years, he was active with Boy Scouts, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout. In this photo, a family friend shows that Sessions was included in the school yearbook's "Senior Who's Who" list. (AP Photo/Brynn Anderson)

1969: Sessions graduated with B.A. in History from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Al. This photo is from his senior yearbook. That same year, he married Mary Blackshear Sessions, with whom he would have three children. (Huntingdon College)

1973: After a year as a teacher, Sessions entered law school at the University of Alabama and received his Juris Doctorate in 1973. He would go on to practice law in Russellville, Ala. and then Mobile. Also in 1973, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served until 1986 and attained the rank of captain. 1975-81: During his time practicing law in Mobile, Ala., Sessions served for two years (1975-77) as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. (This photo is from 2006.) (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

1981: Sessions was nominated by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed as U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Alabama, a position he held until 1993. (This photo is from 2009.) (Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images)

1984: During his time as a U.S. attorney, Sessions' office prosecuted three civil-rights activists for altering 27 absentee ballots, in a case that drew criticism from some U.S. senators. The activists were found not guilty. (This photo is from 2009.) (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

1986: Sessions was nominated by Reagan to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Alabama, but accusations that he had made racially insensitive remarks led the Judiciary Committee to reject his nomination. The alleged remarks included disparaging comments about Civil Rights organizations and that Sessions called a black lawyer in the U.S. attorney's office "boy," a charge that Sessions denied. 1994: Session was elected as Alabama Attorney General and served in that office until 1997. (This photo is from 2016.) (AP Photo/Molly Riley)

During his time in the Senate, Sessions has sat on the Budget Committee, the Armed Services Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, and most notably the same Judiciary Committee that rejected him in 1986. On the Judiciary Committee, he voted to confirm Eric Holder in 2009 but opposed Loretta Lynch in 2015. As for the Supreme Court nominees, he voted for John Roberts (2005) and Samuel Alito (2006), but opposed Sonia Sotomayor (2009, seen here) and Elena Kagan (2010). (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

2015: Sessions formerly recognized what he called the civil-rights "footsoldiers" in a Senate resolution awarding the Congressional Gold Medal. During a tribute ceremony, Sessions said that he felt that he should have done more for the civil rights struggle. That same year, Sessions joined hands with Rep. John Lewis in a recreation of the march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. (Facebook photo)

2016: Ten days after his win, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Sessions for Attorney General. Sessions had been an early supporter for Trump during the campaign and appeared with him at events. Sessions' confirmation process begins this week in the U.S. Senate. (Getty Images)
