Wills Park Pool in Alpharetta is a popular destination in the summer.

The last weekend of May is sort of a benchmark for the summer.

Although calendars will say summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21, Memorial Day marks its unofficial start. It’s often when cookouts begin, fireworks are launched and when folks dip their toes in community pools for the first time.

Speaking of pools, there are several public swimming pools in north Fulton County, and many are open now.

Here’s a quick guide to pools around Roswell and Alpharetta:

Alpharetta City Pool – 1815 Old Milton Parkway

This pool at Wills Park opened on May 27 and will stay open through July 31. Hours vary and can be found  by visiting Alpharetta's website. Admission to the pool is $3, but discounted to just $1 for adults older than 50. Children under the age of 3 are free. The pool offers lessons, diving boards, adult-only swims and a "splash zone" where kids can play.

Roswell Area Park Pool – 10495 Woodstock Road

Roswell's pool also opened May 27, and will remain open through Sept. 4, however it is closed every Thursday for maintenance. The admission cost is $3 for Roswell residents and $5 for non-residents. People ages 17 and under can buy passes for $26 to $39, good for 10 visits to the pool. Visit Roswell's website for varying hours and events.

The facility features a 50-meter Olympic-size pool with eight lap lanes, two diving boards and a children’s wading pool. Programs offered include aquatic exercise programs, youth and adult swim lessons, lap swimming, swim team, lifeguard training, paddleboard yoga and aquatic camps.

Sandy Springs and Milton do not operate public swimming pools, according to city officials.
