Here’s a plus from the ongoing drought: Several groups teamed up Thursday to remove 15 tons of debris from the receding shoreline at the “Styrofoam graveyard” at Lake Lanier, the Gainesville Times reported.
Debris long has accumulated in the area near Olympic Park in Hall County, and the volunteer-led cleanup effort ramped up recently, the paper reported.
Several groups got approval from the Army Corps of Engineers, which maintains the lake’s shoreline, and Hall County authorities waived landfill fees for up to 25 tons of waste, according to the report.
Celeina Houston, who lives near the cove, commended the effort.
“This is so valuable, because we’ve been looking at this for so long, even when the water was there,” she said. “When we had water back here, (debris) just floated in that general area.”
