New lanes of a three-mile section of Buford Highway (Ga. 20) in southeast Forsyth County will open to motorists May 25, making the road four lanes all the way from Cumming into Gwinnett County, Georgia Department of Transportation announced.

“We are working closely with C.W. Matthews to get the remaining safety features installed and ready for traffic by the end of next week,” Brent Cook, district engineer in GDOT’s Gainesville office, said May 17. “This progress is great news as we approach the Memorial Day holiday and folks travel in and out of town.”

C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. has been working on the widening of Buford, between Samples and James Burgess roads, since April 2014. The rebuilt road will have two lanes in each direction with a 44-foot grass median.

While traffic will be permitted on the newly widened section, the $23 million project is not yet complete, as work on the shoulders and other areas will continue, a GDOT spokeswoman said.
