Tuesday Jan. 9 is National Law Enforcement Day, a day created by a group called Concerns of Police Survivors (or COPS) in honor of officers around the country dedicated to protect and serve their communities.

Amid rising public concerns of race relations and police brutality in the country, the day offers an opportunity to show appreciation to officers fostering a safe environment as well as an opportunity to continue the dialogue about police reform.

Want to thank your local law enforcement? Here are five ways to show your appreciation:

1. Wear blue.

2. Write a letter to your local police department or state agency.

3. If you have a positive story about your interaction with law enforcement, consider sharing it with loved ones or on social media.

4. Make a donation to the Atlanta Police Foundation or a local charity aimed at helping law enforcement.

The Atlanta Police Foundation aims to support the Atlanta Police Department and the mayor in preventing and reducing crime in major cities.

Learn more at atlantapolicefoundation.org.

5. Open a constructive dialogue between you and your local law enforcement.

If you see an officer around town (or if you decide to drop by your local police department), start a constructive conversation.
