A 5K race in Alpharetta will force several roads in the city to close at various times Thursday night.

The city is urging drivers to avoid these areas and plan alternate routes for their evening commute. Even on roads that aren’t closed, heavy delays are expected.

The closures are necessary to ensure the safety of people participating in Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation K-9 5K Foot Chase, a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race, the city said.

Here’s the roads that will be closed for the race…

• Haynes Bridge Road: A southbound lane will be closed between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street from 6 to 8 p.m.
• Haynes Bridge Road: A northbound lane will be closed between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
• Academy Street: An eastbound will be closed between Highway 9 and Westside Parkway from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.
• Park Plaza: All lanes will be closed between Academy Street and Haynes Bridge Road from 7 to 7:20 p.m. Those looking to access the parking deck near City Hall can do so via Main Street.
• Thompson Street: A westbound lane will be closed between Westside Parkway and Haynes Bridge Road from 7:15 to 8 p.m.

The race will begin at 7 p.m. at 2 Park Plaza. There will be an after-race party at the finish line. For more information on the race, visit AwesomeAlpharetta.com.
