As a fire destroyed a family’s Cherokee County house, the mother raced through the smoke and flames to save her children, Channel 2 Action News reported.

In all, five children and three adults were treated at a hospital, an official said.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to the 1100 block of Franklin Gold Mine Road after a neighbor called 911, fire spokesman Tim Cavender said.

Crews found that the one-story wooden structure was fully engulfed by fire, Cavender said.

The mother, Taylor Wilkie, raced through the burning home to get to her children, who range from 18 months to 8 years old.

“She has burns all over her back from going in and out,” said her sister, Tammy Wilkie.

The victims’ conditions ranged from minor to critical, fire official Danny West said. They were treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The 8-year-old boy is now on a ventilator.

Investigators said the fire began near a front wall and quickly spread, Channel 2 reported.

Officials from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
