On the heels of The Orchard at White Street Park in Suwanee receiving special recognition by The Georgia Urban Forest Council and Keep Georgia Beautiful, the Atlanta Regional Commission has recertified the city as a bronze-level “Green Community.” Suwanee received the recognition for their commitment to environmental stewardship and their leadership in sustainability practices.

The Green Communities program is a voluntary certification program that helps local governments implement measures that will reduce their environmental impact. Suwanee was specifically noted for their efforts to bring the community together through the growing of fruits and vegetables. Officials at the ARC also highlighted the city as having the state’s largest organic community garden, a rainwater cistern, and a new community orchard.

In metro Atlanta, 20 local governments are currently certified under the ARC Green Communities program. Gwinnett and Cobb counties hold gold certified status. Certified cities in Gwinnett include Suwanee, Norcross and Peachtree Corners. This is the first program in the country to promote sustainability through a green certification program for local governments.
