The Sugar Hill Downtown Development Authority is working closely with the city’s Arts Commission and Preservation Society to obtain donations to fund a second exterior mural for the Suite Spot, the former city hall on Broad Street. The DDA has agreed to match funds up to $10,000 toward the total $20,000 needed to design and paint the mural.

To date, the city has received $4,000 toward the goal. Any donation that exceeds the needed amount will be directed towards the fund for future art initiatives in the city.

Local artist Chris Walker hopes to start the mural in early August and, weather permitting, complete the project in about 60 days. The mural will showcase a timeline of Sugar Hill history from some of the area’s earliest gold miner residents to the Shelley-Howerton home, to Mangum’s Grocery and modern-day city hall.

Sugar Hill’s DDA, Arts Commission and Preservation Society will host a meet the artist ‘Art-B-Que’ event noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Suite Spot.
