Strand Theatre opens

The Strand Theatre in Marietta is set to open after an extensive renovation.

Riggers set up the fixed lighting battens on the stage. The Strand re-opens Dec. 5 when it hosts a three-week run of the Lyric Theatre's Beauty and the Beast, capping five years of fund raising and restoration of the 1935 art deco theater.

Workers put in a new section of brick sidewalk in front of the theatre.

The Strand Theater is shown in 1965, about 30 years after it opened.

Billy Joe Royal performed at the Strand Theatre in the mid-1950s. The Marietta native will be back to perform on Dec. 31.

The last movies ran at the Strand in 1977.

By 2002, a movement was under way to renovate the Strand.

A temporary sign marks the Strand's address.

Construction worker Mike Faulkner -- in the main theater's ceiling area, just below the roof -- was on site as roof trusses were being put into place.

Construction superintendent Steve Rinderle displays some old movie advertisement tracts that were found in the venerable, 1930s-era theater.

Earl Reece, the theatre's executive director, stands on the fourth-floor terrace, which has a good view of the Marietta Square.

Work also is continuing on a lower reception room area, to be used for parties and other functions. The theater also has an upper-level reception area.

The trusses are hoisted to the top of the structure before being put in place.

Scaffolding surrounds the main stage area.

Construction proceeded on the main seating area.

The stage area is renovated.

This is one of the event rooms that will be available for rent. This space, on the second floor of the four-story structure, will have a capacity for 130 people.
