Seven women sue AAA in Cobb auto care ‘Peeping Tom’ case

Seven women who have worked at a AAA Car Care Plus office in Cobb County are suing American Automobile Association, a Marietta subsidiary and a former manager, accusing them of negligence after the manager was arrested on charges of secretly watching the plaintiffs as they used the restroom while on the job.

The women also claim invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress in the suit filed this week in state Superior Court in Fulton County. They are seeking unspecified damages.

Efforts were being made to reach AAA and the subsidiary, Auto Club Group Inc., and the former manager, Scott Joe Carter, for comment. The suit says the Auto Club Group serves AAA members in Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

Carter, 59, of Marietta was arrested in July and charged with unlawful eavesdropping or surveillance, a felony, after police said he peeped inside the women's restroom at a AAA Car Care Plus office on Gordy Parkway near Sandy Plains Road.

In their suit, the women said they noticed Carter would allegedly hurry from the front counter or his office to the men's restroom when a female worker entered the women's restroom. The women said they eventually asked a male co-worker to investigate, and he found several holes had been drilled behind a paper towel holder in the men's restroom that allowed someone to watch women in their restroom.

“Several plaintiffs noticed that when using the restroom they would often hear what sounded like keys jiggling from the men’s restroom,” the suit said.

The women said they complained to Carter’s managers, and the peepholes were “simply covered” with tape. The women said they stopped using the restroom and instead used one at a nearby business.

The women said the peepholes were not permanently repaired until after the authorities began investigating the claims.
