The superintendent of the Polk County school system has been suspended with pay after an “unfortunate incident and disruption” involving his estranged wife in her classroom, according to a news report.

Darrell Wetherington surprised his estranged wife Friday by entering her classroom at a Cedartown elementary school, police said.

Jennifer Wetherington filed for divorce from the superintendent Feb. 6, northwestgeorgianews.com reported.

According to a report by a school resource officer, Jennifer Wetherington received text messages from her estranged husband asking her to call.

Several times she tried to break off any conversation, but “he continued to send messages,” according to the officer’s report.

“She states she was completely surprised when he showed up at her classroom door and asked him what he was doing there,” according to the officer’s report.

Also, Polk police are investigating a Thursday incident involving the superintendent, the news website reported. Details of this investigation were not released.

Darrell Wetherington took over the superintendent post Jan. 1. He previously was principal of Cedartown High School.
