The Sandy Springs City Council has authorized the city manager to contract with Pierce Manufacturing Inc. for a new fire engine/pumper.

The city will pay $560,620 for the engine, and $82,279 for firefighting gear to equip it, through Ten-8 Fire and Safety Equipment of Georgia, according to a staff report.

The engine will be paid for by impact fees and assigned to Station No. 7, covering the northern “Panhandle” area of town, Fire Chief Keith Sanders said.

The purchase is a “sole source acquisition” because Pierce is the only provider of the apparatus that can provide local, in-house servicing, staff said. Also, the unit is compatible with existing department equipment as Pierce has been the sole provider of fire engines and trucks to Sandy Springs since its inception.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
