The Sandy Springs City Council has voted to pay $400,000 to acquire its eighth property along Hammond Drive for an anticipated street-widening project.

The 0.4-acre parcel at 6017 Kayron Drive, at the corner with Hammond, has a single-family home dating to 1956. The seller is Simin Saboohi, according to the city’s purchase agreement for the property.

Of the seven lots previously acquired for the Hammond expansion, five had houses. Four of the homes were razed and one, in good condition, was retained and is being rented to a Sandy Springs police officer. The latest purchase will be inspected and, if it meets city requirements with regard to needed repairs, may be rented to another public safety employee, a city spokeswoman said.

Hammond is a heavily trafficked two-lane road connecting Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. It has houses on both sides of the street. The city plans to turn Hammond into a four-lane divided thoroughfare with sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
