Sandy Springs accepts road grant, OKs street work

Advancing two road projects, the Sandy Springs City Council has accepted a state grant to fund work toward a new downtown street and approved a contract to repair existing streets around the city.

The Council recently voted to accept a $600,000 grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank to complete right-of-way activities for a proposed east-west street, 550 feet long, connecting Roswell Road (Ga. 9) and Boylston Drive.

The two-lane street is to be friendly to walkers and bicyclists, with a 25 mph speed design, 6- and 10-foot sidewalks, landscaping, pedestrian lighting and on-street parallel parking. The total project cost is estimated to be $4.7 million.

The Council also awarded a $316,315 contract to Blount Construction Co. Inc., the lower of two bidders, to perform deep mill asphalt repairs — addressing potholes, cracks, drainage problems and other issues. Locations needing work are Mount Vernon, Mount Paran and Heards Ferry roads and Hammond, Glenridge and Riverside drives.
