Roswell will apply for a $15,000 state grant for the first phase of a proposed, five-phase, multi-year Historic Resources Survey project.

The grant, from the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, supports local preservation and assists communities in complying with the Certified Local Government program, according to a resolution approved by the Roswell City Council.

Surveys also can identify buildings and districts for possible listings in the Georgia and National registers of historic places, HPD says on its website.

The grant will require an equal match of $15,000 from the city. The Community Development Department would oversee the survey of an estimated 530 resources in the Historic District and another 70 known to meet historic criteria.

“Typical survey information includes an exterior architectural description of each resource 40 years of age or older, photographs, and field notes on its age, history, setting and geographical location,” HPD says. “The survey data is entered into an online database known as GNAHRGIS,” Georgia’s Natural, Archaeological and Historic Resources Geographic Information System.
