Residents of the Towne Lake area will have walking trail to downtown Woodstock with the opening of the Towne Lake Pass Trail.

A ribbon cutting is set for 5 p.m., Jan. 4, at the Woofstock Park trail head at 150 Dupree Road. The multi-use trail runs from Towne Lake Hills South, past Woodstock Middle and High schools and under I-575, to Woofstock Park.

There, the path connects with the Noonday Creek Trail, which leads to Market Street in downtown Woodstock. The new trail was built with Cherokee County; the Board of Commissioners approved a $2.86 million construction contract in December 2016 with Integrated Construction & Nobility Inc. Funding involved Woodstock’s portion of 2008 county parks bond proceeds.

In 2016, the city and county board jointly dedicated the trail to former Woodstock City Council member Tessa Basford, who passed away in 2014. Woodstock Parks and Recreation Director Preston Pooser called the trail “a vital connection for the city of Woodstock’s Greenprints Trail System.”
