The body of a Marietta firefighter returned home Saturday morning, officials said.

Ron Herens, 23, who was killed in a car crash Monday night while on vacation in Los Angeles, returned to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport at 8:21 a.m. on Delta Air Lines Flight 926.

A procession left the airport immediately and traveled north on I-75 to Windy Hill Road, then headed west on Windy Hill Road to West Cobb Funeral Home. The funeral home is located at 2480 Macland Road.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Church, which is located at 4665 Macland Road in Powder Springs. A celebration of Herens’ life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Chapel. Interment will follow at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park.

Marietta Fire Chief Jackie Gibbs struggled with not only losing one of his department’s best and youngest but also the frustration of dealing with a loss that happened across the country.

Gibbs said Herens and four other young firefighters, the class of 2013, were wrapping up a vacation trip in Los Angeles when their rental car was rammed at an intersection by a suspected drunken driver.

Departments wishing to participate in the procession to the grave site are asked to arrive at the church by 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
