Pro Wakeboard Tour hits Lake Allatoona

The Pro Wakeboard Tour competition on Lake Allatoona features pro men and women and a junior event in separate competitions. The Pro Wakeboard Tour is attracting athletes from all over the world and is being held at Dallas Landing Park on Lake Allatoona in Acworth. The events are open to the public.

Riders will do flips and spins and hit the rails on Lake Allatoona this weekend at the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Kress of Oklahoma City has a spill on a ramp as he competes in the junior men's division for ages 14-18.

Kress jars his helmet loose during a run. Whether on the beach or on a boat, 8,000 to 10,000 spectators are expected.

Johnny Tobaben, 16, who lives part of the year in Buford and part in Orlando (to train with his coach), jokes with other athletes before his turn in the junior men's division. Wakeboarding, which began during the 1980s, bills itself as the fastest-growing board sport in the world, beating out skateboarding, surfboarding and snowboarding.

Calvin Miller, 15, of Covington goes airborne during the junior men's division. Acworth is the smallest of the five cities on the Pro Wakeboard Tour, and it gets high marks from participants.

An athlete's red board shines as he goes upside-down in the junior men's division. "Acworth blows it up for us," says Zane Schwenk, 32, a 15-year tour veteran. "They're so accommodating. We're not too rowdy, but we're a little rowdy."

Taking in all the fun are (from left) Maureen LaRiche of Boca Raton, Fla., Robyn Valdez of Canyon Lake, Calif., and her son Jacob Valdez, 14. Jacob and his older brother are competing, as well as one of LaRiche's family members.
