Powder Springs officials will open the new covered outdoor basketball court as the newest addition to Silver Comet Linear Park on Richard Sailors Parkway.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24 with Mayor Al Thurman, several Council members, county officials and community leaders.

The McEachern High School women’s basketball team, 2017 Girls 3-AAAAAAA State Champions, will lead a basketball clinic following the ceremony.

“When Mayor Thurman first came up with the idea to offer a place for community youth and adults to be able to play basketball, he made it clear he wanted something the community could get excited about and that could be used year round,” said the city’s event coordinator Sherry Garner.

Designed and built in just a few months by Croy Engineering, the full-sized court, at one end of Linear Park, includes a covered court, stadium-style seating for spectators and a large addition to the parking area.

“We look forward to seeing members of the community enjoy this basketball court for years to come,” said the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director Trudy Crunkleton.
