Ouch: Atlanta named one of America’s least attractive cities

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but according to more than 50,000 beholders, Atlanta is, to our dismay, one of the cities with the least attractive people in the nation.

That’s according to Travel+Leisure’s “America’s Least Attractive Cities” list, part of its overarching “America’s Favorite Places” survey in which 50,000 readers decided the categorical fate of 38 U.S. cities across several brackets, including America’s best cities for brunch, most underrated cities and, of course, the least attractive residents.

While voters lauded Atlantans’ trendiness, intelligence and the city’s music culture, they weren’t particularly impressed with the locals.

The metro ranked eighth of nine American cities.

Hotlanta? Not exactly, according to T+L readers, who were unimpressed with the city’s locals. Fortunately, they score well for intelligence, thanks to universities like Emory as well as headquarters for several Fortune 500 companies. Readers also think Atlantans are trendy, with a wealth of luxury stores and stylish boutiques as well as a nationally-recognized hip-hop and pop scene—Usher and Justin Bieber call the town home.

Naturally, Atlantans may get a bit defensive. After all, the metro had previously been on the other side of the spectrum as one of the most attractive cities in America, according to the magazine.

So it seems our bountiful lush park grounds, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, nearby mountaintops, hidden waterfalls and killer skyline just weren’t attractive enough to woo voters — our locals, according to this ranking, have some work to do.

“There’s no arguing that amidst its spacious skies and purple mountain majesties, the United States has some objectively gorgeous people,” Travel+Leisure’s Peter Schlesinger wrote. “But looks aren’t everything, and, as the saying goes, ‘beauty attracts the eye, but personality attracts the heart.’ Some cities, it seems, rely more on the heart.”

  1. Baltimore, Maryland
  2. Sacramento, California
  3. Spokane, Washington
  4. Charlotte, North Carolina
  5. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  6. Cleveland, Ohio
  7. Tampa, Florida
  8. Atlanta
  9. Memphis, Tennessee
For the seventh year in a row, Atlanta was named the top moving destination by Penske Truck Rental in its 2016 ranking.
