An off-duty Atlanta police officer could face charges after a crash report released Monday confirmed he was driving at a high rate of speed in last week’s crash that left one person dead.

Charges, if any, aren’t expected until after the investigation is complete, Georgia State Patrol officials said.

Officer Shawn Jones Jr. was driving down Peachtree Street when he failed to maintain his lane, left the road and hit a curb, according to the report.

Jones’ car drove along the curb at a high rate of speed and traveled through Peachtree and Spring streets intersection before hitting a building.

Officials were seen removing SWAT gear and an Atlanta police bulletproof vest from Jones’ car in Wednesday’s crash.

Jones was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he had surgery. It is unclear if he is still in the hospital.

It’s believed he was racing another car at the time of the crash that killed Jones’ passenger Ramish Attai, 20, of Lilburn.

A witness in the report said she didn’t think Jones was going “that fast.” The report did not specify how fast Jones was driving.

Jones is the son of Atlanta Assistant Police Chief Shawn Jones Sr.

Jones Jr. works in the police department’s airport division, Atlanta police spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said. He has been with the department since November 2011.
