Tucked away at the very end of the March city council meeting and not on the published agenda for the evening, Norcross officials voted 3 to 1, with Councilmember John Bare opposed, to approve $63,000 for the demolition of the former Plaza Latina building at 5735 Buford Highway. The demolition crew is aware of the need for asbestos abatement during the process.
Two years ago Norcross officials petitioned to condemn the two-acre property and purchase it by eminent domain after a $1.5 million offer for the land was declined by the owner.
Norcross plans to the use the lot for construction of a new public library and public parking for Downtown Norcross.
