Nightly construction has begun as part of a bridge preservation project involving the eastbound span of Ga. 53 over the Chattahoochee River near Gainesville.

Crews will be painting the bridge’s steel structure and replacing joints between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. nightly through mid-January, weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation said. The eastbound side of the Hall County bridge will see intermittent lane closures to a single lane.

The assignment was awarded with another bridge project – Ga. 60 over the Chattahoochee – to begin after the New Year, GDOT said. S&D Industrial Painting Inc. of Tarpon Springs, Fla., was given the $1.2 million contract.

Ga. 53 crosses the north end of Lake Lanier, connecting Forsyth and Hall counties.
