Intersections may become safer if a transportation research project among Kennesaw State University and the Georgia and Cobb County Departments of Transportation is successful.

The three entities have agreed to evaluate video analytic software for traffic safety at signalized intersections, using the new flashing yellow arrow traffic signal displays as they become the standard for left-turn phasing when budgets and schedules permit.

No funding is involved in this research project with the KSU Georgia Pavement and Traffic Research Center.

The KSU center is developing a software tool, as part of an ongoing research project sponsored by GDOT, to extract real-time “near-miss crash events.”

The center has submitted a grant request to GDOT to study the “Safety and Operational Impacts of Variable Left Turn Phasing Implementation,” estimating an 18-month project duration.

Cobb’s requirements for the research project will be limited to recording traffic surveillance camera video at the FYA intersections to improve safety and traffic flow.
