Oct. 5 execution date set for Dougherty County murder

Just hours after Troy Anthony Davis was put to death by lethal injection, the state Department of Corrections on Wednesday set an Oct. 5 execution date for a man sentenced to death for raping and murdering a woman in March 1994.

An execution warrant, signed by Superior Court Judge Willie Lockette, allowed the Department of Corrections to schedule Marcus Ray Johnson's execution at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the state prison in Jackson, where hundreds protested Davis' execution late Tuesday night. During a 1998 trial, Johnson was condemned to die for sexually assaulting and killing Angela Sizemore by stabbing her 41 times after they met at an Albany nightclub. BILL RANKIN

No more free tickets to High event

Atlantans who hoped to visit the High Museum of Art for free as part of Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on Saturday ... not so fast.

The High pulled itself off of the Museum Day Web site after 2,000 tickets (good for two people each) were printed.

"We had to limit the downloads to manage possible overcapacity issues," said High spokeswoman Cassandra Streich. "Last year we had no limits, and more tickets were downloaded than we could accommodate in one day."

Arts groups collaborate in promotional campaign

Atlantans can look out for six billboards going up at the end of September with the messages: "Atlanta Art Lives Here" and "You Are Where the Art Is" and information about one of the 20-plus participants. The billboards will be followed by a series of radio spots and print advertisements. The campaign was organized by AtlantaPlanIt.com, a service of Public Broadcasting Atlanta.

Declines in funding, attendance and media coverage and a public sentiment that there's not enough to do in Atlanta "make it necessary for each organization to find unique ways to minimize costs while maximizing impact," Atlanta PlanIt editor Nicole Jones said. "This collaboration is working to shirk those sentiments.”
