Mercer University’s football team lost 28-27 to Wofford on Saturday, Sept. 9, but its marching band won in a big way at halftime.

The band — which has existed in some form since the 1890s — helped a fellow student pull of a major surprise near the end of its halftime performance at Five Star Stadium. The band honored senior drum major Maia Nichols as her boyfriend, Zach Mikos, lingered nearby.

After the public-address announcer said some kind words about Nichols, he set Mikos up to make his move.

“And by the way, your boyfriend Zack has a question he’d like to ask you.”

The band began to play as Mikos got down on one knee and asked Nichols to marry him in front of the band and everyone in the stadium.

She quickly nodded, said yes, and the couple hugged at the 50-yard line.

Mikos is a neurobiology major from Alpharetta and Nichols is a chemical commerce major from Marietta.
