Former Nicholson Mayor Ronnie Maxwell pleaded guilty on Monday to one charge of theft by taking related to using taxpaying money for personal purposes.

He was accused in 2015 of using $10,000 in special purpose local-option sales tax money to pave his mother’s driveway, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Maxwell claimed the driveway he paved was part of a public street called Old James Maxwell Road. However the street does not have any signage, nor does it exist on Google maps.

The former mayor is expected to accept a plea deal that will allow him to be sentenced as a first offender after paying restitution of more than $6,100, the Jackson Herald reported.
