Atlanta mayor’s race: Sen. Bernie Sanders to stump for Fort in Atlanta election

Former state Sen. Vincent Fort said at a campaign event Thursday that U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will be in Atlanta to campaign for Fort later this month.

Fort said Sanders, the popular independent who challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016, will be in Atlanta Sept. 30. Details haven’t been nailed down yet.

“We are on the cusp of getting into the runoff,” Fort told cheering backers at an event at Argosy in East Atlanta Village.

Sanders endorsed Fort in the campaign, and Fort was Sanders’ biggest champion in the Democratic presidential primary. Fort also counts among his endorsements former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes.

Attempts to reach Sanders’ representatives were not immediately successful.

“Sept. 30 Bernie Sanders is going to fight with us,” Fort said.
