The Lucia and Mark Wilton Foundation donated $225,000 in April for teacher training and student materials to support literacy in Marietta City Schools.

The district intends to make a long-term commitment to prioritize literacy and language development, with particular emphasis in grades Pre-K through 5, according to a school district statement.

Goals will include:

  • All teachers of Pre-K will implement Read Right from the Start strategies with a focus on phonological awareness and language development.
  • All teachers of K through third grade will implement Benchmark Phonics during school years 2019-22.
  • All teachers of first through third graders will participate in 30 hours of comprehensive training in Orton-Gillingham (Classroom Educator Level).
  • All teachers of fourth and fifth graders will implement the MCS Balanced Literacy Framework.
