A Cobb County grand jury indicted a Marietta man Thursday after he allegedly tried to rob a Mableton gas station with a machete.

The case against Derrick Girard Coleman will move forward with charges of aggravated assault, attempted armed robbery, possessing a knife during a felony and criminal damage, court records show.

Coleman walked into the Citgo at 832 Clay Road late Sept. 18 wearing a brown mask and demanding the cashier give him money, according to a Cobb police warrant.

When the cashier didn’t give up the money, police said, Coleman whipped out a rusty, yellow machete and jammed it in the window opening.

When nothing worked, including breaking the alarm sensor, Coleman threw the machete in the freezer section and split.

He was arrested about 20 minutes later and taken to jail, where he’s remained.
