In the early hours of Christmas Eve, an unknown man brought a gunshot victim to DeKalb Medical’s Hillandale campus and left.

The victim was Carlos E. Kaigler, a 34-year-old Covington man, who was pronounced dead within minutes. He’d been shot eight times across his body, according to a police report released Wednesday.

Details are scant so far.

DeKalb County police are still trying to determine what led to the shooting, Maj. Stephen Fore said. No charges have been filed in the death.

Benjamin Taylor, 47, of Stone Mountain was charged with tampering with evidence, but details haven’t been released.

Fore said detectives believe the shooting happened on Sharonton Way, a short dead-end off Redan Road. It’s about seven miles from the hospital.

Witnesses got the tag number of the Chevrolet Tahoe driven by the man who dropped off the victim. Before leaving, the man gave a nurse the name of the victim.

But after police arrived, the Tahoe came back to the hospital, which is off I-20 near Lithonia. Kaigler’s girlfriend and another woman were inside.

The girlfriend and friend were detained and questioned, the report said. They weren’t charged.

Kaigler's funeral is planned for 1 p.m. New Year's Eve at Bentley's Chapel in Macon, according to his obituary.
