Former Fulton County Judge Glenda Hatchett will represent the family of Philando Castile, one of two men shot by police last week, in civil legal matters, according to a release.

Castile, 32, was shot Wednesday in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, during a traffic stop in front of his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds, who filmed the death and posted it to social media. His death, along with Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sparked protests across the nation, including in Atlanta.

“Valerie Castile and her family are very passionate and committed to ensuring that Philando’s death is not just another statistic,” Hatchett said in the release. “She wants her son’s death to mark a time in this country’s history where reform becomes less about rhetoric and more about reality.”

Castile was a school nutrition services supervisor.
