The Johns Creek City Council has given the go-ahead to a city arts nonprofit to engage an Ellijay artist, Eric Strauss, to create a sculpture to be permanently installed in the roundabout at Bell and Boles roads.

The Public Art Board asked that the council approve the proposal, for a mixed-metal sculpture of a standing horse 13 feet tall, so that Johns Creek Beautification – ArtsSpot can engage the artist, begin raising funds, and donate the work to the city.

A concrete base installed in 2015 for a temporary art display remains at the roundabout, according to a staff report to the council. The proposed sculpture, staff said, “will be located in the center of the roundabout secured to the existing concrete base. It will be see-through. … The metal structure of the art work will not be a solid cast-metal statue. This will allow drivers to see oncoming traffic.”

It may take up to two years to create and install the sculpture, the Public Art Board said in a presentation to the city. Information: http://bit.ly/2zWJtYk
